Works in Dodewaard
Born in Rotterdam, 1931 - 2013 passed away
Ben Joosten was originally a sculptor. In later life, he switched to making compositions with old-fashioned letterpress materials. He built up large compositions with wooden letters and lines which he himself would then print on a letterpress machine. He thus continued the tradition of old typographical masters such as Werkman. The letterpress print in the collection consists of a black surface composed entirely out of copper lines. The structure of these lines is fully visible on the print. Because of this, it is not a contemplative black surface but a surface which encourages viewing and studying.
