Jacqueline Overberg

Works in Arnhem
Born in Beek (L), 1961
AKI Enschede 1982 -1987
Although recognizable in shape - a gun with a puff sleeve - Overberg's work doesn't surrender easily. What you see is not a real gun and a sleeve. No, it is a twig in the shape of a gun, its pellet and trigger are made of wax. Everything a real gun is not. Opposite materials. Steel as opposed to wax and wood. Similarly, the puff sleeve does not consist of fabric, but of a kind of papier-mâché. What message Overberg issues is not entirely clear. When you look at it you also look for the hand which would logically connect the puff sleeve to the gun. This, she has omitted. What Overberg does show is beauty and aesthetics. In that sense, in a veiled way, she makes violence attractive. Maybe that's what she wants to achieve with this work.
