NGMI is the title of her show, NOT GONNA MAKE IT. Does Crouwers mean that we are not going to make it in this world? Are we ultimately going to perish? Are we too slow to recognise, for example, the awe-inspiring climate problem? Do we all think “it will take our time”? Crouwers keeps herself awake and alert, and she shares this with the audience. The three spaces at DE.GROEN have each been given their own signature and meaning.
In this show, space has been made for THE PLOT, the small family forest that has been cleared. Is this a harbinger of what lies ahead, or is it the beginning of new life? Crouwers portrays the family forest through penetrating video animations and sound. She does not explain, but at most provides interpretation. The viewer interprets for themselves.
All the images in this show together reveal the world that Crouwers constantly travels through from behind her computer. Through the sometimes mythical past to the distant future. In an interview in HART no. 200, she says: ‘Because I try to relate to those extremes as a mediator in time, I naturally skip large chunks of time’. It is a kaleidoscopic world full of references. Crouwers plays with time, the past and the future. She calls herself and us to account for the disruption of the climate (THE PLOT). She then slows down time or stops it altogether, lulling you to sleep (COMPLICIT). With the video NGMI, she presents us with moving tableaux. Is it disturbing or does it reassure us? We must draw our own conclusions.
