The work Frank Halmans shows in this exhibition is just a fraction of what he's done. From over twenty-five years of being an artist, he's showing a small sample of what's come out of his brain and hands over the years.
With a fraction of his work, he shows us a great deal. Take, for example, the Abandoned Gallery Flat from 2018. Or Seasonal Work from 2004. Or Gebilde No. 36 (Street) from 2023.
The common thread in this wide variety of works is that many of them are scale models. But they are not models that imitate reality. Halmans shapes reality to his own liking. In doing so, he creates his own world that we can all enter. Halmans looks close to home. The everyday environment, home, interior, architecture. He has an eye for the very small (see the series Be my guest) but also for the very large (Abandoned Gallery Flat). He often works from memory and nostalgia without becoming sentimental. He avoids this by setting out a clear and direct line in all his works. Although the work contains humour and irony, there is almost always a veiled tension that counteracts the humour and irony. Perhaps that is where the secret lies, the treacherous gentleness with which Halmans draws you into his work.
There is a great deal to see and discover in this exhibition. Gaandeweg (Gradually) is the title Halmans chose for the exhibition. Indeed, gradually, that is correct. Gradually, halfway. The show features works from the past twenty years. ‘Perhaps the best is yet to come,’ he says in the conversation I had with him. That could well be true. In any case, Halmans obliges himself to come up with and execute many more ideas in the time that lies ahead.
