SHOW 17 Maidentrip I 2021
Marloes Roeper and Paul Heuzinkveld
16.09 — 16.09
2021

Maidentrip is a new initiative by Collectie DE.GROEN. Every year, we attend the final-year exhibitions at various art academies. We have close ties with two of these academies, ArtEZ Arnhem and HKU Utrecht. In the recent past, there have been small presentations featuring students from ArtEZ. Now, for the first time, we are showcasing four graduating artists, each of whom will have a solo exhibition in one of the two rear rooms at DE.GROEN. Two artists from ArtEZ and two from the HKU.

Do you have a particular theme in your work, and how did you arrive at it?

My work explores situations in which fragility plays a major role. These are situations within worlds and subcultures that I love and admire. At the same time, I poke fun at those situations in my work. In those situations, I ask myself what the role of the man is. For me, that is a flawed man who is comfortable, who embraces his status as a loser. What if you try to fail? Not as a sacrifice, but as a new man, an emancipated man. The ‘Loser’ as the new man in today’s society. Only then can the man become a human being.

How do you start a piece of work and how does the creative process unfold?

I start with a story, a narrative or a memory. The core of this story must contain a sense of unease, a duality. With a touch of humour. I translate this idea by trying out lots of different things. I find this the most enjoyable part of the process, but it’s often over the quickest (in my view). Of course, how this process unfolds varies enormously depending on the medium. Usually, I have several ideas running simultaneously and I switch from one medium to another. That way, I never get bogged down or bored with a particular medium. When you have ADHD, that’s a very pleasant way of working, at least for me.
