“OPERA is a title that doesn’t give much away,” he says. OPERA (Latin, plural for works) “It’s a five-letter word. Actually, all my solos have five-letter titles.”
Before Van Eyk made his plan for this solo, he first took in the space. Floor plans, the height of the space, what the walls and floors are like, and so on. All information he needs. Ultimately, the performance of his show consists of an interplay of autonomous works and works that intervene in the space. These are the works that give the space a different appearance. Sometimes these interventions rub up against the architecture, but without becoming architecture themselves. For example, Van Eyk lays floors that are both logical and illogical.
In the studio, Ricardo van Eyk explains how he was shaped by the places of his youth and how he seeks connection with the outside world. It is evident in all his work; he distils his own world of images from the constructed world of new housing estates, roads, buildings, rubbish containers, landfills, hangouts, skate parks, fences, enclosures, waiting rooms, satellite dishes, and so on. He is not a romantic but a realist. An intuitive thinker and creator. He does not make things more beautiful, but he does make them different. He makes things that resemble something, but you cannot immediately tell what. He does not force you, but he does ask you to look closely.
In this solo show, Van Eyk takes control of the space. Logical and illogical floors, shiny reliefs, rhubarb leaves in greenhouses, plates that are not plates, closed cupboards, structures and textures, and so on.
As a viewer, you wander through Ricardo van Eyk's work. You can look at it from a distance, but you can also search the space.
